Finding & Working With a Lawyer

How to Find a Personal Injury Lawyer by State: Bar Referrals, AVVO, and Martindale-Hubbell

Looking for a personal injury attorney in your state? Learn how to use bar referral services, AVVO, and Martindale-Hubbell to find qualified, vetted lawyers.

After an injury, finding the right attorney quickly matters. Statutes of limitations are running, evidence is perishable, and insurance companies may be collecting statements. You do not need to hire anyone in the first meeting, but you do need to start the search promptly.

Three tools are especially useful: state bar lawyer referral services, AVVO, and Martindale-Hubbell. Each has different strengths.

State Bar Referral Programs

Every state bar association operates a lawyer referral service (LRS). These programs are designed to connect the public with licensed, in-good-standing attorneys in their state. Some programs allow the referring attorney to charge a reduced-rate initial consultation fee — often $25 to $50.

The advantage of a bar referral is basic vetting: the attorney must be licensed in your state and in good standing. The limitation is that participation is voluntary, so the best-known firms in your market may not participate.

AVVO

AVVO is a free attorney directory that assigns numerical ratings (1 to 10) based on publicly available information including disciplinary records, years of experience, industry recognition, and client reviews. An AVVO rating above 8.0 is generally considered strong.

AVVO is useful for quickly narrowing your geographic area and practice area, reading client reviews, and seeing how active the attorney is in the legal community. Note that attorneys can pay to appear higher in certain search results, so ratings and featured placement are different signals.

Martindale-Hubbell

Martindale-Hubbell is one of the oldest attorney directory services in the country. Its peer review ratings — AV Preeminent, BV Distinguished — reflect assessments by other lawyers in the legal community, not just clients. An AV Preeminent rating indicates the highest level of ethical standards and professional ability as judged by peers.

Martindale is particularly useful for evaluating attorney reputation in complex, high-value injury cases where peer standing matters.

What to Do After Finding Candidates

Once you have a short list, call for a free consultation with at least two or three attorneys. Ask: - How many personal injury cases similar to mine have you handled? - What percentage of your practice is personal injury? - How do you communicate with clients throughout the case? - What is your fee structure, and what costs will I advance?

Trust your instincts about communication style. The best attorney for your case is one who is experienced, responsive, and who explains the process clearly.
