How do I deal with an insurance adjuster after an accident?

Insurance adjusters work for the insurance company, not for you — their primary goal is to settle your claim for as little as possible. When dealing with an adjuster: be polite but cautious; do not give a recorded statement without consulting an attorney (you are typically not legally required to do so for the other party's insurer); do not admit fault or speculate about your injuries in initial conversations; do not sign any medical authorization forms that give the insurer unlimited access to your entire medical history; and never accept a settlement offer without fully understanding the extent of your injuries and losses. Keep detailed records of every communication, including dates, names, and what was discussed. If you hire an attorney, all communications from the insurer should go through your attorney. Insurance adjusters are trained negotiators, and having professional legal representation immediately shifts the power dynamic in your favor.
