What happens at a free initial consultation with a personal injury attorney?

A free initial consultation is your opportunity to evaluate the attorney and for the attorney to evaluate your case. Bring all documents you have: the police or incident report, any photographs, medical records and bills you have received, correspondence with the insurance company, and information about your employer and lost time from work. During the consultation, the attorney will ask you to describe the accident, your injuries, and the treatment you have received. They will assess the strength of your liability claim and provide an honest initial estimate of your case value — though a full evaluation requires reviewing all evidence. You should use the consultation to assess the attorney as well: How do they communicate? Do they explain things clearly? What is their specific experience with similar cases? Who will actually handle your case? What is their contingency fee percentage? An honest attorney will also tell you if they believe you do not have a viable case.
